Being vigilant about unnecessary land development
Questionable land development projects sacrificing the environment not only happen in Indonesia. Last week SLC advisor Laura Lancée joined a protest against plans to build an extra hockey field in a communal park in Leiden. Although sports are important for people both socially and for health reasons, the protesters object to the high costs. First, a large part of the park will be destroyed, including 67 trees. Second, the construction will cost the Leiden tax payers over 5,5 million euros. This fund will be gained by cutting expenses for environmental education and green initiatives. Local parties are planning a referendum urging the municipality to reconsider before a final decision in November.
The protest by Stichting Vrienden van het Roomburgerpark, Leiden Party for the Animals, Leiden Socialist Party and Bomenbond, was picked up by Leidsch Dagblad and other news channels.
